After 2 changes of plans and a sprinkler scare, we got our young couple, T & L, engaged (see previous post.) T. wanted the exact spot they met to propose to L. We only had a few hours to round up whatever we wanted to use to create the setting. Since it needed to be in the park behind our yard, we carried part of our yard out to the pine tree under the full moon: A rocking bench, 3 tables, 4 pots of flowers, 2 candle lanterns, 2 candles, a tray, 2 cloths, a dish of cookies, champagne flutes and an iced bottle of bubbly (only thing on hand was sparkling cider), and rope light shaped into a heart encircling the bench. Tom was able to rig up an old amp and CD player to our outdoor speakers to provide non-stop piano jazz for the event. He also powered the park for the rope light via a very long heavy-duty extension cord. Most of the above was hastily carried back to the yard when the sprinklers in the park began to come on zone by zone approaching our "set." I prayed. The sprinklers near us never started. Hooray! A moment's reprieve, but we had no guarantee that when the couple arrived they wouldn't get sprayed!
Carrying bench and all back out, we re-set up. Then came the cell phone alert that they would be here soon. Time to light the candles and lanterns and keep vigil from the gate. The breeze was brisk and in few minutes blew out the candles. Hoping I wouldn't be seen, I ran out to re-light them. Come on guys, hurry, before anything else happens! After several false alarms of different cars driving by, one slowed and stopped at the park. Yes! We shut the gate and headed inside the house to wait. We wanted everything to go well and made ourselves go sit down on our side deck so we couldn't spy.
Sometime later we got a call from the park thanking us for helping and giving us the news. She said, "Yes!" (We had no doubts about that part.) Congratulations Tim and Liz!
